1: What is the E-7 Visa?

The E-7 visa is one of Korea’s employment visas for foreign nationals and is issued to those who intend to engage in designated professional activities.   E-7 Visa (Korean Work Visa for Foreign Nationals)
  • Target Applicants:
    • Foreign nationals seeking to engage in specific activities
  • Scope of Activities:
    • Areas requiring specialized skills, knowledge, or expertise as designated by the Minister of Justice
This visa is granted to individuals who are contracted to work in roles specially designated by the Minister of Justice, in either public or private institutions within Korea.   The term "designated activities" refers to roles in industries or sectors where the Korean government recognizes a strong need for the inflow of foreign talent with specialized technical skills or knowledge to enhance national competitiveness.

2: What Are the 4 Types of E-7 Visas?

The E-7 visa is broadly divided into four categories based on the type of foreign workforce: skilled professionals, semi-skilled professionals, general technicians, and skilled laborers.   The 4 Types of E-7 Visa
  • E7-1 Skilled Professionals
    • High-level executives, life science experts, and others possessing specialized skills and knowledge.
  • E7-2 Semi-Skilled Professionals
    • Workers in office and service sectors such as sales staff and transportation service personnel.
  • E7-3 General Technicians
    • Technicians and workers such as animal caretakers and aquaculture technicians.
  • E7-4 Skilled Laborers
    • Skilled workers in fields like agriculture, forestry, livestock, fisheries, manufacturing, and construction.
The E7-1 Skilled Professionals category includes managers and experts such as high-ranking executives in economic organizations and life sciences specialists, covering 67 job types. The E7-2 Semi-Skilled Professionals category includes workers in sales, transportation services, and other office and service sectors, covering 10 job types.   The E7-3 General Technicians category includes technicians and workers like animal caretakers and aquaculture technicians, covering 10 job types. The E7-4 Skilled Laborers category consists of 3 job types in agriculture, forestry, livestock, fisheries, manufacturing, and construction.   Currently, foreign workers are being employed in a total of 87 different job categories under the E-7 visa program.

3: What Are the Eligibility Requirements for the E-7 Visa?

The eligibility requirements for the E-7 visa are divided into general requirements and special requirements.   General Requirements
  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus at least 1 year of work experience
  • At least 5 years of work experience in a related field
Under the general requirements, applicants can apply for the E-7 visa if they have a master’s degree or higher in a field related to the job category, or if they hold a bachelor’s degree clearly related to the job category along with at least one year of relevant work experience, or if they have at least five years of work experience in the relevant field.   Special Requirements
  • Experience working at a Global Top 500 company
  • Graduates (or prospective graduates) from prestigious international or domestic universities
  • Outstanding talents in advanced technology, interns with advanced technology status
Under the special requirements, applicants who have worked for at least one year in a professional role at a Global Top 500 company, hold a bachelor’s degree from a world-renowned university, or have graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a domestic university or technical college may qualify.   Additionally, outstanding talents recommended by relevant government ministries in advanced science and technology fields, advanced technology interns, specially recognized Japanese software engineers, highly skilled professionals recommended by ministries, high-income specialized professionals, individuals who have completed training at reputable private institutions, chefs, workers in core industries, skilled technicians, and shipbuilding welders are also included in the special requirements.

4: What Are the High-Demand Job Categories for the E-7 Visa?

Let’s take a look at some of the major job codes with high demand in Korea through the E-7 visa.   Overseas Sales Representative (Code 2742) Job Description: Sales activities related to the export and import of goods with overseas buyers. Applicable To: Foreign workers engaged in overseas sales, trade, or import/export sales. The Overseas Sales Representative (2742) visa is issued to foreigners involved in sales activities for exporting products to overseas buyers and importing products from overseas sellers. This also applies to trade sales representatives and import/export sales personnel. However, those who only handle sales for domestic online shopping malls or only package goods for delivery are not eligible.   Chef and Cook (Code 441) Job Description: Planning menus, managing kitchen operations, and supervising cooks. Applicable To: Various culinary fields including Western, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine. The Chef and Cook (441) visa is issued to those who plan menus and oversee cooks and kitchen assistants in hotels, restaurants, ships, and other facilities. This visa applies to chefs and cooks specializing in a variety of cuisines such as Western, Chinese, and Japanese. Applicants must clearly prove their qualifications or experience.

5. What Is the K-Point E74 Evaluation System and Its Mandatory Criteria?

The E7-4 points-based system applies to skilled workers and allows foreigners who have stayed for more than 4 years within the last 10 years on E-9, E-10, or H-2 visas and are currently working normally at their workplace to change their visa status through the K-Point E74 system.   What are the K-Point E74 evaluation requirements?
  • Must have stayed in Korea for 4 years or more on E-9, E-10, or H-2 visas
  • Must score at least 200 points out of a total of 300 points on the K-Point evaluation
  • No criminal record or violations of immigration laws
  • Submission of Korean language proficiency documents (TOPIK score or completion certificate of the Social Integration Program)
  • Submission of a recommendation letter from the current employer’s representative
The total K-Point E74 score is out of 300, with a minimum of 200 points required to qualify. The evaluation is based on factors such as average income, Korean language skills, age, bonus points, and deductions. Therefore, submitting all required documents and proof is very important.   However, applicants who have been sentenced to fines over 1 million KRW, have unpaid taxes, violated immigration laws more than 4 times, have a history of illegal stay over 3 months, or are deemed to harm national interests, public safety, economic order, or social order may be disqualified or face point deductions.   Korean language proficiency is a crucial evaluation factor, so submitting proof such as TOPIK scores or Social Integration Program certificates is mandatory.   Bonus points are awarded for factors including years of service at the current workplace, certifications, degrees, and possession of a Korean driver’s license.   Among the required documents, the recommendation letter must be issued only by the representative of the business where the foreigner is currently employed. Fraudulent recommendations or acceptance of bribes can cause disadvantages for the foreign applicant, so caution is advised.

6. Final words
